After listening to the “This American Life” episode on unintended consequences, I’m obsessing on why it is so easy for us to support legislation that makes life so hard on illegal immigrants that they return back to places where they don’t have jobs and live in constant fear of violence, but it would be so hard for us to look at a 5-year old girl and tell her that we were going to make it impossible for her to go to school, to go to the doctor for the earache that is making her miserable ...more...

His mom made a concerted effort to get the fees waived, but was not successful - she ended up covering the hit.
